In December 1990 three women working for local government training scheme in Machynlleth identified the need for quality pre-school childcare.
They were meeting women who wished to return to work after being at home with their children for a couple of years, while others wanted to particpate in part-time or full-time training schemes. The majority of these women felt prohibited from re-training or entering the workforce due to the lack of an available Nursery facility. The Machynlleth Community Children's project was established in 1991 by a group of local parents who wanted to increase the availability of quality childcare in the local community. At this time it catered for babies and children up to the ages of 4 years, offering high quality, bilingual pre-school care. They were able to buy second hand play and nursery equipment from Powys Training.
Initially staff were employed in a government training scheme which contributed towards paying for salaries. We also received donations from local individuals, businesses and communityt groups as awell as a small grant to help with start up costs. As the project developed it was recognised that an Out of School Care provision for older chidlren was also needed in the area.
In 1996 with the aid of a National Lottery grant, the Machynlleth Out of School Club was set up in the Community Centre in Machynlleth. The Out of School Club relocated to Ty melfed, adjacent to Ysgol Gynradd, Machynlleth in September 2006. The club offersd escellant value, affordable childcare and play opportunities all year round, for children up to the age of 12 years.
It runs both an After School Club during school term times and a Holiday Play Club during School Holidays.
Aims
To provide accessible, affordable childcare for primary aged children throughout the area.
To provide a variety of activities including crafts, cookery, sports etc.
Encourage self-esteem, self-awareness and self-confidence.
Encourage the children to respect other people’s feelings, values and property.
Encourage children to take responsibility for their club by caring for one another and taking care of equipment.
Encourage children to welcome new members and show them the ropes.
We aim to help children develop into their full potential through positive, social, emotional, physical and intellectual experiences.
We actively encourage children to learn that values deriving from different backgrounds of racial, cultural, religious and linguistic should be recognised and respected. Children’s individual needs e.g. disabilities and gender, are reflected in the service we provide.

Daily Routines & Gallery
Part One – After School Club
Session Time
The children who are due to attend the After School Club and attend Ysgol Gynradd are collected by our dedicated staff at the end of their school day. They are escorted back to the club where they are allowed to play freely, giving them the chance to unwind after their busy school day. Whenever possible they have free access to both indoor and outdoor areas, weather permitting.
A selection of activities are always available, however, we are led by what the children prefer to do, as we feel this makes the club feel more like their own, somewhere they can relax and enjoy positive relationships with everyone who attends.
Part Two – Holiday Club
Session Time
The Holiday Play Club provides a stable and secure place for your children to play and relax with their friends during school holiday times. There are some routines that take place at the Holiday Club each day , including a healthy snack time in both the morning and afternoon sessions. The activities on offer at the Holiday Club vary considerable from day to day and season to season but below are some examples of activities that have occurred in recent Holiday Club sessions.
